"And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth."(Gen 9:1)
"Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate."(Ps 127:3 - 5)
This has been the cornerstone of Christendom's position on child bearing, birth control, adoption, vasectomy and hysterectomy for hundreds of years and the pursuant result is a planet well populated, and a prolific missionary base to, "go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature"- Jesus.
This is such an anchored belief in many places that it affects whole country's political arenas and the way they view family oriented legislation. Given the climate of today's world and the Biblical time frame we find ourselves in, should we be examining this more closely ?
Up to and including the time when Jesus was here with us this was a most sane and beautiful approach to life, and the propagation of humanity. Jesus Himself even compared the faith it required to enter into eternal life as that of a child and had a group of them gather around Him to make the point.
Now, let's contextualize (to put into context) the whole thing:
The Scripture is quite explicit when it deals with having things in context and not exagerating any one point. Except for Salvation through the blood of Christ, there are variables that, in the right time frame are great, but in the wrong time frame can be disasterous. You've no doubt heard the expression, "a good thing at the wrong time is not a good thing" ? That's the point. Let's see what the Bible says about that.
"1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
9 What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?
10 I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.
11 He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end."
(Ecl 3:1 - 11)
"As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction"(2Peter 3:16). Taking things out of context and attempting to make them fit where it best suits some personal peeve.
Balance seems to be an important factor when applying Scripture to our daily lives. This is why it requires the prayerful leading and guidance of God's Holy Spirit in order for things to be in their place. "Let all things be done decently and in order."(1Cor 14:40)
So, as much as there is in the Scriptures about how children are a blessing and having babies is a blessed event, there is one very important instance when it is the exact opposite. This occurs during the period the Bible refers to as the EndTime and more specifically during the possesion of the character called the "anti-Christ" by Satan himself when the devil is kicked out of Heaven for his last hourah in the "Great Tribulation". For more on that please see "EndTime Thoughts" in this site.
Jesus said,"Woe unto them that are with child and to them who give suck in those days!"(Mt 24:19, Mk13:17) The word used here is "woe" which is defined in Strong's Concordance as ; an exclamation of grief./ Alas! "Alas", being defined by Mirriam-Webster's Dictionary as ; used to express unhappiness, pity or concern. Apparently it becomes a bad idea ! A good thing at the wrong time.
Are we living in the EndTime and is this "anti-Christ" about to rise ? Is this that timing we are in ? "For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." (Mt 24:38 - 39)
To the unlearned and uneducated in the Scriptures things will pretty much seem the same right on up to the coming of Jesus at the "last Trump". But we, who are saved, and meant to be led by the Spirit of God are to, "rightly divide the Word of Truth" (2Tim 2:15) and prayerfully follow the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
No one can tell you whether or not to have children as this is a situation that requires you to exercise your own faith based on what you believe the Lord wants for you. One consideration should be the time-frame that we are in.
