"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are."(1Cor 3:16-17)
"And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."(2Cor 6:16)
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?"(1Cor 6:19)
The question here that begs to be asked is," Where do you keep Jesus, in a building or in your heart ?" In spite of the above Scriptures we still hear about how important it is to "go to church", "go to the church of your choice" ect... when the reality is that you don't have to go to any church at all ! The "church" or "temple" that God is interested in is you, your body. You are the temple of the Holy Spirit, if you have accepted God's gift of Salvation in Jesus, that is.
The entire reason that we are told that we should "go to church" is so as not to contradict the verse that says,"Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."(He 10:25) but this has been taken completely out of context. No where in that verse does it say that in order to assemble you had to be in a building. In could be a field, a car, a bus, the catacombs ect... The point is to not forsake getting together, at times, for some Godly edification. Daily emailing fits this bill just as well, if not better, than attending some building once per week for an hour or so.
The temple that God wants to live in is the temple of your body, where He can be manifested, and live and breathe and work through you for the betterment of others. The Bible says that," Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ."(1Pe 2:5) We are living stones built up into a spiritual building for the Lord, not a brick and mortar ridgid building where people are fortunate if they get any real Bible instruction at all.
You, dearly beloved brethren, are the body of Christ. Each and every one a precious living stone. The only places that Jesus referred to a physical temple is in one case in Mathew 24 where He said it would torn down stone by stone, which happened a few years later during a Roman occupation and another place where He chased out a bunch of merchants that were using the temple as a flea market.
Aha !, you say, you see He called the temple the "house of God". Very astute. At that time the people were still under the priesthood and the physical emblems of spiritual realities as Jesus was still in a human body and had not yet been glorified. It wasn't until after His passing that the veil of the temple was torn in two abolishing the priesthood and all that temple-worship stuff. Jesus Christ being made the new High Priest once and forever !
A whole mess of things changed when Jesus was victorious over death and hell by coming back from the dead, not the least of these being the abolition of the priesthood. Some folks haven't yet picked up on that and are gleefully wasting millions and millions of dollars contructing buildings instead of putting all that revenue to real constructive use in putting missionaries into the field and really making a difference in getting the Word out to those who need it most.
"Go" to church ? I "am" the church ! My body is the living temple of the living God Who lives and works in me of His good pleasure.
